Marine Wildlife Sightings in Cape Cod Bay & Stellwagen Bank
The waters surrounding Plymouth Harbor, Cape Cod Bay, and Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary are among the most productive whale watching areas in New England. During the season, it is common to encounter humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, and the rare North Atlantic right whale feeding in these nutrient-rich waters.
In addition to whales, guests frequently observe Atlantic white-sided dolphins, harbor porpoises, basking sharks, seals, and occasionally sea turtles. Seabirds including shearwaters, gannets, and storm petrels are also commonly seen diving for baitfish.
Because this is a private whale watching charter, your captain can adjust the route based on the latest wildlife sightings throughout Cape Cod Bay and Stellwagen Bank, giving your group the best opportunity to encounter marine wildlife up close.

What happens if we don’t see whales on our trip?
Plymouth Cruises has a 99% success rate for seeing whales on all our trips!
Are there restrooms on the boats?
All our boats are equipped with restrooms, regularly cleaned and maintained by our crew.
What do I need to bring for whale watching?
The temperature on the water is typically about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than on land, so you will likely want to bring a light sweatshirt or jacket, even if it’s warm on land. You may also want to pack a rain jacket in case the weather takes a turn. Other things you’ll want to bring include a camera to get great shots of the whales, binoculars for a closer view, sunglasses and sunscreen. We recommend wearing sneakers or closed-toe shoes aboard the boat for safety reasons.
How long are whale watching tours?
We want to give you a good amount of time to spend in the presence of these majestic creatures, so the total tour time varies depending on how long it takes us to get to the whales’ location.
What types of whales are there in Cape Cod Bay?
Our whale watching tours involve heading out to Cape Cod Bay and Stellwagen Bank, a marine sanctuary and one of the primary feeding grounds for humpback whales, finback whales, minke whales, and the endangered right whales. Our naturalists will tell you more about these types of whales throughout the tour, identifying which species of whale you are viewing and providing educational information about their habits.
Can we buy food and beverages on the boat?
We offer complimentary bottled water. You are welcome to bring any snacks or food you would like for the duration of the trip.
